Our Mission

Literacy as the Foundation of Freedom — Evidence-Based, Lifespan, Equitable

LES AMIS DE LA FLORE was founded on the singular principle that literacy is the most powerful tool for social mobility and justice. Without the ability to read, write, and critically analyze information, individuals are perpetually locked out of economic opportunity, healthcare access, and democratic participation.

Our mission is therefore not simply to teach reading, but to radically transform life outcomes by guaranteeing universal access to high-quality, evidence-based educational support. We envision a world where every child and adult, regardless of geography or circumstance, possesses the literacy skills necessary to lead a life of dignity, choice, and full civic engagement.

We pursue this mission through three non-negotiable strategic cornerstones that guide every program, policy, and partnership we undertake.

Three Cornerstones of Our Strategy

📚 Cornerstone I: Evidence-Based Intervention

We commit exclusively to methods scientifically proven to work. For foundational reading, this means mandatory adherence to the Science of Reading, utilizing systematic and explicit instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency. We rigorously assess all programs using pre- and post-tests to measure grade-level gain, ensuring that donor and volunteer efforts translate directly into verifiable student success.

🌱 Cornerstone II: Holistic Lifespan Support

Literacy needs do not end in childhood. We address the full spectrum of educational needs, from the earliest stages of language development (0-5 years) through adult workforce literacy and senior digital inclusion. This comprehensive approach recognizes that an illiterate parent often raises illiterate children, creating a cycle we are dedicated to breaking. Our programs integrate family learning, creating a mutually reinforcing environment of learning at home.

⚖️ Cornerstone III: Radical Access and Equity

We prioritize outreach to the most underserved communities: rural areas lacking infrastructure, individuals in correctional facilities, refugees, and those with learning disabilities. We leverage mobile technology, low-bandwidth digital platforms, and community partnerships to eliminate barriers of geography and poverty. Equity means providing not just opportunity, but the targeted resources necessary for everyone to succeed, regardless of their starting point.

Our Core Values

🔬

Accountability

We track and report on measurable gains in reading fluency and comprehension, not just participation rates. Our longitudinal data system tracks former participants for up to five years post-program.

🤝

Transparency

We undergo an annual independent audit of our financials, which are publicly disclosed along with our IRS Form 990. Trust is earned through transparency.

🌍

Equity

We provide not just opportunity, but the targeted resources necessary for everyone to succeed. Our programs are designed to reach those who need us most.

💡

Innovation

We leverage mobile technology and low-bandwidth digital platforms to reach the hardest-to-reach communities, constantly refining our approach based on empirical data.
